Are you a woman that worries about breast cancer? I certainly am. I have no family history of breast cancer, I am relatively healthy, I eat well, Ok maybe I don’t drink as much water as I should, but for the most part, I do pretty well. So why am I worried? I worry because African American women are twice as likely to die from breast cancer as their white counterparts. I worry because there is a higher incidence of breast cancer now than ever before. I worry because younger and younger women are succumbing to this disease. I worry because women in my practice often don’t have insurance and don’t present for care until they feel a lump. I worry because a majority of the women I serve do not even do a self breast exam let alone come in to see me regularly for me to do a clinical one. And I particularly worry because the message of prevention is not getting through.

Cancer is a scary word to hear but nothing strikes more fear into a woman than the diagnosis of breast cancer. Sadly although women of African descent are more likely to succumb to this dreaded disease we are not heeding the message to improve our lifestyles in order to prevent it. Once again diet and exercise might well be the best approaches to prevention of breast and other types of cancer. Annually in October the focus is on getting women to realize the importance of screening, such as mammograms and practising breast self-exams.

I challenge you this year to look at the equally important message of natural, affordable PREVENTION; things that you can do by and for yourself, regardless of your financial or insurance situation. Consider this: walking up to 3 times a week, gradually increasing to a daily walk or jog, costs absolutely nothing. Drinking 8 or more glasses of water and eating fresh fruit and vegetables as often as possi! ble is acheivable and affordable with a little forethought. Really, I mean really, learning how to check your breasts and following-up quickly when you feel a little something suspicious. I urge you, if you already have an area of concern, to avail yourself of all the resources that are usually in place locally in October. You know what is at stake for you, your family and your friends if you continue to ignore your symptoms; act now and face your fear.
