Women, Heart Disease and Stroke

Heart disease isn't just a man's disease. Heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases are devastating to women, too. In fact, coronary heart disease, which causes heart attack, is the leading cause of death for American women. Many women believe that cancer is more of a threat, but they're wrong. Nearly twice as many women in the United States die of heart disease and stroke as from all forms of cancer, including breast cancer.
The American Heart Association has identified several factors that increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. The more risk factors a woman has, the greater her risk of a heart attack or stroke. Some of these risk factors you can't control, such as increasing age, family health history, and race and gender. But you can modify, treat or control most risk factors to lower your risk.

Which, in turn, means that we are also missing out on a whole lot of nutrients that are essential to a healthy diet.
According to a recent 2-year USDA study, the following are some of the most important essentials that we are continually missing out on:

1. What You’re Missing: Fiber (recommended daily allowance is 22-34 grams)

Black Babies Are Dying! - Press Release

The Link Between Black Women's Health and Infant Mortality Orlando, FL January 12, 2006 The Birth Place, a unique birthing center and midwifery practice, today announced Our Black Babies Are DYING! a conference focused on the state of black women's health in Florida. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the event is being held Saturday January 14th 2006 at the Holy Trinity Reception and Conference Center (1217 Trinity Woods Lane, Maitland). The purpose of this event is to raise awareness of the infant mortality rate among black women in Florida.

The continued, dire state of Black infant mortality and poor perinatal outcomes is of grave concern to health care practitioners and providers, as well as to the public at large, said Ms. Jennie Joseph, clinical director of The Birth Place and organizer of the conference. The more women know, the more they are able to help themselves and this conference is designed with them in mind.

Menopause - Jennie's Comments

Much confusion abounds around the topic of menopause - the complete lack of periods for one year. I believe that just as we all differ so widely in our childbearing experiences, we also differ in our menopausal changes. It is difficult to predict when or how a woman will enter menopause. We now recognize the perimenopause or premenopause as a phase occuring bfore the final menopause itself, which may begin as early as age 35. Ultimately, you will experience it in your own unique way. Menopause just like puberty and childbearing is a life event over which you have no control. Your best game plan is to be in the best health you can be and arm yourself with knowledge from reliable sources. Partner with a health professional that you can trust and depend on to individualize your care. You will find that just like the other "life events" you'll make it through!

Jennie's Comment - Diet and Nutrition

When I think about preventative health I immediately think about the power of good nutrition. Unfortunately, although we all know and understand the connection, we face an ongoing battle to make the right choices when it comes to what we eat. Often, when we feel unwell, the first thought is to reach for an over-the-counter medication, prescription drug or worse yet, more of the very "comfort food" that has made us unwell in the first place. It seems that many of today's illnesses are preventable, many of them are food related (consider the diabetes epidemic) and many of them disproportionately impact people of color. If, like me, you struggle with making good food choices then consider that it is time to make a change. Start with modelling for your (our) children. Often, what we can't do for ourselves we can do for our kids. Begin by being aware that every time you eat a healthy meal they will learn from you. Shop with them in mind, ease them into a different mindset, and bring yourself along with them. Gradual change is more effective and there will be less resistance. Remember how hard you worked to eat well during your pregnancy and ask yourself, "what changed now that they are here?"

I am thrilled with the quality of the product, the medical research and the simplicity of taking my capsules and receiving 17 vine-ripened, juiced and dried fruits, vegetables and grains daily.
